He was speaking at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA). "Does Russia really wants small, tiny strip of Ukraine soil, integrate the country. No, this is nonsense. Putin is probably putting pressure because he knows he can do it, and he splits EU opinion. What he really wants is respect," said Kay Achim Schönbach. He further stated that it is easy to give Vladimir Putin the respect he really demands, and probably also deserves. Former German navy chief's words 'ridiculous & dangerous'; China, Germany remain strategic partners

Shenzhen TV: It is reported that German Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach said in a speech on January 21 during his visit to India that he is a “very radical Roman Catholic” and sees China acting as “an enemy”, and called on other countries that “We need Russia against China”. What is China’s comment?  Zhao Lijian: His remarks feature typical religious extremism. In today’s world defined by peace and development, overtly preaching religion-based division of blocs and inciting hatred and hostility is a regression of history. It is ridiculous and extremely dangerous. This practice should be universally condemned by the international community. We noted that Schönbach has already resigned and he has only himself to blame for that.  I would also stress that China and Germany are comprehensive strategic partners. Since the formation of the new German government, Chinese and German leaders had close interaction, and agreed that it is important to have a keen grasp of the bilateral relations from a strategic perspective and promote practical cooperation with a pragmatic attitude. Both sides agreed to take the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2022 as an opportunity to strengthen communication and cooperation, expand mutual benefits and win-win outcomes, respond to challenges in joint hands, and make due contribution to global governance. (9 Nov 2021) The chief of the German Navy on Tuesday said the dispatch of a German frigate to the Indo-Pacific underscores his country's worry peace and free navigation were being threatened in the region, hinting at but without naming China.   Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schoenbach was in Tokyo to mark the German warship Bayern's port call in Japan as part of its deployment. He said escalating contentions, territorial disputes and a changing military balance in the Indo-Pacific can cause an extensive impact beyond Asia. Schoenbach said the Bayern also will pass through the South China Sea to demonstrate its right to sail its waters without interference. The frigate arrived in Tokyo on Friday, becoming a first Germany warship to visit Japan in nearly 20 years. One of the Bayern's key missions while in the area is to monitor for three week beginning mid-November under a UN Security Council resolution of maritime activities by North Korean ships, including possible ship-to-ship transfers of banned cargoes in regional seas. It will be Germany's first participation in the mission that started in 2018 and has since been joined by New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, Britain and France, as well as Japan. Germany's navy chief stepped down on Saturday (January 22) after drawing criticism for saying Russian President Vladimir Putin deserved respect and that Kyiv would never win back annexed Crimea from Moscow. "I have asked Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht to relieve me from my duties with immediate effect," Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schoenbach said in a statement. "The minister has accepted my request." Schoenbach made the remarks to a think-tank discussion in India on Friday (January 21), and video was published on social media. The comments came at a sensitive time as Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops on Ukraine's borders. Diplomatic efforts are focused on preventing an escalation. Russia denies it is planning to invade Ukraine. In New Delhi, Schoenbach, speaking in English, said Putin seeks to be treated as an equal by the West. "What he (Putin) really wants is respect," Schoenbach said. "And my God, giving someone respect is low cost, even no cost... It is easy to give him the respect he really demands - and probably also deserves," Schoenbach said, calling Russia an old and important country. Schoenbach conceded Russia's actions in Ukraine needed to be addressed. But he added that "the Crimea peninsula is gone, it will never come back, this is a fact," contradicting the joint Western position that Moscow's annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 cannot be accepted and must be reversed. Prior to Schoenbach's resignation, the defence ministry publicly criticised his remarks, saying they did not reflect Germany's position in either content or wording. Schoenbach apologized for his comments. "My rash remarks in India ... are increasingly putting a strain on my office," he said. "I consider this step (the resignation) necessary to avert further damage to the German navy, the German forces, and, in particular, the Federal Republic of Germany." The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry had called on Germany to publicly reject the navy chief's comments. Schoenbach's comments could impair Western efforts to de-escalate the situation, Ukraine said in a statement. "Ukraine is grateful to Germany for the support it has already provided since 2014, as well as for the diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict. But Germany's current statements are disappointing and run counter to that support and effort," Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said separately in tweet. ....................................................................................... Manohar Parrikar IDSA-🤍 On Saturday, Germany was embroiled in a diplomatic incident as a result of statements made by Navy Chief Kay-Achim Schönbach against Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ukraine conflict. The German Navy Chief resigns over comments made in India on Ukraine and Russia. What were Schönbach's remarks? Navy chief Kay-Achim Schönbach was speaking on 'Germany's Indo-Pacific Strategy' at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi. According to German Navy Chief Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schonbach, Berlin and India require Russia to counter China. He also claimed that he is not scared to announce that China is an adversary of many countries and that China is not the pleasant country that we imagined. The views clearly contradicted the stated positions of the EU and the United States. According to Washington and its allies, Moscow's annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 was unacceptable and must be reversed. How did Ukraine react? The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has urged Germany to condemn Schönbach's remarks about Crimea, claiming that they harm efforts to oppose Russian aggression. "Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted, "Ukraine is thankful to Germany for the help it has previously offered since 2014, as well as for the diplomatic efforts to settle the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict." However, Germany's present words are disheartening and contradict previous support and effort.

(24 Jan 2022) Germany's Foreign Office on Monday commented on the resignation of the head of the German navy, saying that the government "explicitly disassociates itself from the comments made". Late on Saturday, Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schoenbach resigned after coming under fire for saying that Ukraine would not regain the Crimean Peninsula, and for suggesting that Putin deserves “respect.” His comments, captured on video, caused anger in Ukraine, which summoned the German ambassador to complain. They also sparked consternation and a swift rebuke back in Berlin. By late Saturday, Schoenbach had asked for his dismissal, saying he wanted to prevent further damage resulting to Germany and its military from his "ill-considered statements." In a statement, the German navy said Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht had accepted Schoenbach's resignation and appointed his deputy as interim naval chief. The German government has insisted that it stands united with its NATO allies on the issue of Russia's military threat to Ukraine, warning that Moscow will pay a high price if it makes any military moves against its neighbor. But unlike many other NATO countries, Berlin says it won't supply Ukraine with lethal weapons, arguing that it doesn't want to inflame tensions further. Germany's foreign ministry also said financial support was being offered towards travel costs of family members, following a U.S. move to order the families of embassy personnel in Ukraine to leave and announcements by Britain to withdraw some diplomats and dependants from its embassy. Germany is monitoring developments, but German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stressed that “we must not contribute to unsettling the situation further". German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger on Monday said that "there are definitely other measures that could be taken", but added that current arrangements were deemed "appropriate" at this point in time. (25 Jan 2022) China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday blasted the head of the German navy for making what it called "absurd" and "extremely dangerous" remarks against China during his visit to India last week. Speaking at an event in India on Friday, Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach said Ukraine would not regain the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Schönbach also said it was important to have Russia on the same side against China as it was also a "Christian country". "It is backpedalling in history to openly advocate the division of camps based on religion and incite hatred and hostility. This is not only absurd, but also extremely dangerous," said Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Schönbach's comments, captured on video, caused anger in Ukraine, which summoned the German ambassador to complain. They also sparked consternation and a swift rebuke back in Berlin. By late Saturday, Schönbach had asked for his dismissal, saying he wanted to prevent further damage resulting to Germany and its military from his "ill-considered statements." Separately, Zhao said China was "closely following" the situation in Burkina Faso, where rebel soldiers declared a military junta after detaining the country's democratically elected president. "China calls on all parties in Burkina Faso to bear in mind the fundamental interests of the country and its people, resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue (and) restore normal order as soon as possible," said Zhao.
