The Kidnap of Idun - Norse Mythology: One of the most well-known goddesses in Norse mythology is Idun. She is the guardian of the enigmatic fruits that the gods eat to preserve their youth and fend off aging. Odin, Loki, and Hoenir, three of the Aesir gods, were traveling across barren mountains far from Asgard. Due to the lack of food in this desolate area, the tourists killed an ox for their dinner when they came upon a herd of them. But no matter how long they left the meat in front of their fire, it never began to cook. They were perplexed when they heard a voice speaking to them from above. They noticed a really huge eagle perched on a neighboring branch when they looked up. He claimed, "It is I who, by my powers, stop your catch from cooking. But if you give me enough meat to eat, I'll free the other people from my spell. The gods consented, much to their annoyance, and the eagle flew down to take the best cuts of the ox for himself. As this went beyond the boundaries of their agreement, Loki became enraged and grabbed a strong branch before lunging at the eagle. With a perplexed Loki still on to the branch's other end, the eagle pulled the branch from Loki's grasp and flew high into the sky. The eagle, who was none other than Thjazi the giant in disguise, refused to release the scared god unless Loki took an oath to deliver him Idun and her fruits. When the group returned to Asgard at the end of their journey, Loki went to Idun and told her that he had discovered fruits growing in a forest outside of Asgard that were even more magnificent than her own, and that she should join him there and bring her own apples for comparison. Idun pursued the trickster, and when she arrived in the woods, Thjazi lifted her into his eagle form and carried her to the giant's home. Thrymheim, which means "Thunder-Home" in English, was a location on the highest mountain peaks, where its icy towers roared down at the lush plains below. The gods and goddesses saw their aging process accelerating without Idun. Their energy diminished, and their skin and hair started to wrinkle. Idun was last spotted with Loki as the two left Asgard, according to reports, when they all gathered together and inquired among themselves about the circumstances of her disappearance. When Loki refused to tell them what had happened to the fair goddess, they grabbed him and threatened him with a variety of pains. When Loki revealed his tale, the gods warned him that he would be killed if he failed to save Idun from Thjazi. He went to Jotunheim, the home of the giants, where Thrymheim was situated, after Freya loaned him her hawk feathers, which allow one to change one's shape into that of a hawk. To his great delight, he arrived in Thrymheim and saw that Thjazi had gone out to sea to fish, leaving Idun at home alone. The goddess was instantly transformed into a nut by Loki, who then sped off with her in his talons. Thjazi adopted the form of an eagle when he discovered that his prize had vanished upon his return, and he flew toward Asgard in pursuit of Loki while filling the air with the thunderous beats of his wings. The behemoth was rapidly closing the distance when the deity finally caught sight of his house. When Loki's friends saw the pursuit approaching, they constructed a ring of kindling around their fort. Loki successfully passed the barrier while holding Idun in his arms. The fire was then started by the gods, and it erupted so quickly that Thjazi was unable to escape the flames before turning around.
