I made this with a 3D sketch using an equation driven curve. I used a sweep, but to not have the cross section twist, I had to use a direction vector. For my spring: x = 1*sin(t) y = 1*cos(t) z = 0.125*sin(3.5*t)+0.075*t with x(t) = radius*sin(t) or radius*cos(t) y(t) = radius*cos(t) or radius*sin(t) z(t) = amplitude*sin(number waves*t) + (if you want it to grow upwards) (spacing*t) The cross section is a rectangle. You can use this equation in other CAD programs that have cylindrical coordinates: r = 1 phi = t*360 z = .125(sin (t*360*3.5)) + .......

The helix tool doesn't give you an option to do this, so you have to use some surfacing wizardry to get the job done. Once you learn this method, you can apply this same workflow to all kinds of spring shapes. This method uses a surface sweep with the "specify twist value" option turned on.
