This is a slow play-along to the shamisen part of Japanese Minyo song "Yasaburo Bushi" (no repetition). Ever since I first heard it, it has been one of my favorite shamisen songs. The tuning is sansagari (三下り), so the strings are tuned to C-F-Bflat. That's the most uncommon yet in my eyes most interesting tuning. The tempo is approximately 120bpm. As usual, I played it without a click, so the tempo varies slightly throughout the song :D If you feel comfortable with this version, gradually increase the tempo and head over to the ~120 bpm version to play along with whenever you feel ready: 🤍

Shamisen Play Along | Hanagasa Ondo 花笠音頭 | moderate tempo

Let’s play Hanagasa Ondo on Shamisen together! This Play Along is in moderate tempo, so a great level-up if you have practiced with the slow version already! The verse will be repeated once and the tuning for this song is Honchoushi: C-F-C. This tempo is pleasant to listen to, I think, so try to enjoy your own playing to the fullest! If you haven't caught this info yet: Hanagasa Ondo is a lovely dance piece. The title means "Flower Hat Dance" and the colorful hats you can see in the background are the kind of hats that are used for the dance. The choreography is a bit more complex than other Obon songs (such as Tokyo Ondo, Tanko Bushi) but great fun with the flower hats. There are little bells attached to the backside of those flower hats that jingle along when dancing❤️ The song originates in the Yamagata prefecture, but it's popular across Japan. I made a slow version if this is still a bit too fast, and a quick version if your hands are ready for a challenge! Here's where you'll find the slow version:  🤍 And this is the link to the quick version: 🤍 = If you didn’t know yet, here’s some great news: Kyle Abbott and I are hosting a weekly free online Shamisen Group Class - open for all skill levels. Learn how to play the Tanabata song "Tanabata Sama" on Shamisen with me! In the video, I play the piece in two speed levels with the accompanying scores displayed. You can download the full notation as a pdf and the two speed levels in separate mp3 FOR FREE over here: 🤍 There's a love story connected toTanabata [ たなばた or 七夕: "Evening of the seventh" ]. The story goes roughly so: Orihime and Hikoboshi who lived in the night sky were deeply in love. While that is actually a beautiful thing, unfortunately this made them forget about their work duties. That's why they were punished by separating them with the milky way. They can only meet once every year - yes, you guessed right: On the evening of the 7th of July, Tanabata. The how and why of this festival took a couple of turns throughout the centuries, but nowadays the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi is celebrated on Tanabata. The Tanabata song that you're learning today relates to the Japanese custom for Tanabata is to write your wishes on colorful little paper slips and hang them on a tree. The original Japanese lyrics are included in the notation in kanji, hiragana and romaji :) They translate to: The bamboo leaves rustle and sway under the eaves. The stars twinkle like gold and silver powder. I have written on the five-colored paper strips. The twinkling stars are watching from above. If you want to support this project, I'd be happy to welcome you as a fellow shami nerd supporter on Patreon :) Enjoy!

Also: Spaß haben und jeden Fortschritt gebührend feiern! Viel Spaß beim Lernen und Üben! What Not To Play on a Shamisen

28.01.2007

While travelling to Hokuriku in Japan we took a Shamisen trial lesson. After playing and recording the traditional tune Sakura, I was fooling around a bit. One tune every guitar player knows how to play is "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple. It's simple - if the instrument has strings, you can play Smoke On the Water on it. Additional goodie: the typical Chuck Berry-style Rock'n'Roll-lick. I completely messed up the lick on the IV and didn't even dare to try the Vth.

Sakura ("Cherry Blossom") is a traditional Japanese folk song that celebrates the transient beauty of the cherry blossoms, as they briefly appear in the spring in a burst of color, and then fade quickly. My arrangement features the traditional Japanese instruments of koto (harp), shamisen (guitar), and shakuhachi (flute). Filmed in Knight's Park in Collingswood, NJ. Recorded by Paul Butler, with filming assistance from Stephanie Budin.
