How To Avoid a Common Scope Mounting Mistake

Randy Newberg talks about a common mistake some people make when selecting the wrong rings for the size of their scope, most often to occur when mounting a large objective lens scope. When mounting a scope it is desired to have the maximum eye relief, most often by moving the scope further back in the rings. As the scope moves back, the large objective end, usually called the "bell" of the scope get closer to the barrel. If the scope rings are not high enough and the scope is too large, it can cause the scope to come in contact with the barrel, resulting in serious issues of accuracy and consistency. In this video, Randy purposely shows how it can happen and then shows how to prevent it from happening. Thanks for watching and good luck at the range. One Of The BIGGEST Scope Mounting MISTAKES

In this video, Randy Newberg shares one of the biggest scope-mounting mistakes that people make and how you can avoid doing the same. He shares a product that he found that has made this process a lot simpler and fool-proof. People often without knowing it don't have a perfectly level reticle when they mount their scope. This may not seem like a huge deal under 100 yards, but as your range extends the cant of the crosshair is going to cause a more and more dramatic problem upon impact. It's very important to maintain a perfectly level cross hair vertically and horizontally. Randy is mounting new Leupold Optics scopes on his signature Howa rifles, and shows his process so that you can be ready to go in the field. Scope Mounting - A Quick Mount Height Calculation

This is a useful method to quickly find out the scope mount height you need for your scope. Taking two quick measurements, you can work out the minimum mounting height required for your scope. We measure the Objective Lens Outer Diameter and also the Mid Tube Diameter, then use these measurements to determine the distance between the bottom of the mid tube to the bottom of the objective lens. The example on the video and the working out is as follows: On a Zeiss 3-12x56 Scope Half of the Objective Lens Diameter of 62mm = 31mm minus Half of the Mid Tube Diameter of 30mm = 15mm Equals 16mm Mounting Height Required We use this method every day to work out what height mounts customers require. Another Example would be: Swarovski DS 5-25x52 Half of Objective Lens Diametre of 65mm = 32.5mm minus Half of the Mid Tube Diameter of 40mm = 20mm Equals 12.5mm Mounting Height Required We also look into a method to achieve a lower mounting height by looking at the drop between the action and the barrel. This varies from rifle to rifle, so we would usually ask you to measure this. Whereas it is usually around 4 or 5mm, we cannot be totally sure of this. Bearing this in mind, if your barrel drop measures 5mm and you have a Zeiss 3-12x56 with a 16mm Mounting Height, you can lower this 16mm by 5mm, resulting in a 11mm Mounting Height Required. This would be the very minimum height you would need, so it's normally a good idea to add a couple of mm to this minimum height to guarantee that you avoid any contact with the barrel. A safe height here would be 12 or 13mm of mounting height. You can then look at various mounts, with the knowledge that your minimum mounting height needs to be at least 12 or 13mm to be safe. ADDITION TO THE VIDEO: Although you may achieve a low scope mounting setup using the correct hardware. An extra thing to check is the bolt clearance on your scope. On some occasions you may find the bolt lift hindered by the scope's eye piece. We're happy to answer any questions and if you have any, please feel free to leave a comment below. Utilizing scope helps our machines be more efficient in how they allocate memory, but from a pragmatic perspective they allow us to reuse symbol (i.e. variable) names. In this lesson, you'll also learn that having 'no scope' is what creates a global variable, and they tend to NOT be good for design in our programs. ►YouTube Channel: 🤍 ►Please like and subscribe to help the channel!

Quick Tip: Common Scope-Mounting Mistakes To Avoid

42808
2670
165
00:08:21
15.02.2023

Mounting a scope isn't a super-complex or highly technical job, but there are ways you can mess it up. Steve and Caleb are here to tell us about common pitfalls to avoid when you're mounting a rifle scope. 1. Make sure the rings don't touch any part of the turret housing, objective bell, or eyepiece. Any one or combination of those will throw off your shot groups big time. Make sure those rings are clamping ONLY the scope's main tube. 2. Steve's pet peeve is scope rings that are not tightly clamped to the scope base. If you can grasp the scope with one hand and the rifle with the other and there's play between them, your groups are going to be all over the place! Scope rings come with torque specs for a reason, adds Caleb. 3. Make sure there's clearance between the objective bell and the rifle. No part of the scope should touch the rifle itself. The only nexus between the scope and the rifle should be the scope rings - and they're not actually part of the rifle. This also applies to a removable lens cover. When it's on the scope, it should not touch any part of the gun. 4. Don't mount the scope too low on an AR-15. On most rifles, you do want the centerline of the optic as close to the bore as you can get it. But the AR-15's stock is on almost the same plane as the top of the receiver, so you need some height on the scope. Otherwise, it'll be too low for you to look through it. 5. Overtightening the scope rings = VERY BAD. You can actually crush the scope tube and damage the optic beyond repair. Stick to those torque specs! If the rings come with a little wrench, that wrench is all you need to tighten 'em. 6. What about steel scope rings? Are they better than aluminum? According to Steve, aluminum rings are just fine for the average scope. If you have a huge scope and a rifle chambered in a heavy-kicker cartridge, then go with steel scope rings. On a 5.56-chambered AR-15, aluminum rings or a one-piece aluminum scope mount provides all the strength you need. Bonus: a dedicated AR-15 scope mount will position the scope at the correct height.

Quick Tip: Correct Scope Height - AR-15 vs Conventional Rifles

12.05.2021

How low can you go? That's the question Brownells Gun Techs Caleb Savant and Steve Ostrem answer today - in the context of mounting a rifle scope on your AR-15. The old rule of thumb is that you should get the scope as close to the centerline of the bore as you can. So mount that scope really LOW on your AR, right? The guys say "Nope!" The top of a flattop AR-15 receiver is pretty close to being in line with the top of the stock. If you mount a scope that low, you won't be able to get your head low enough on the stock to actually see through the it - at least not comfortably. On a traditional rifle like the Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, or Howa 1500, the stock drops down in back, so there's room to mount the scope low and still get your head down to see through it. If you look at a carry-handle AR-15, you'll see that the "iron" sights sit pretty high off the receiver and barrel, and that's about where you want your optic to sit when you mount one. Most readily available one-piece AR-15 scope mounts provide the right amount of elevation, so the average adult won't develop a crick in his/her neck trying to see through the scope!

Torture testing Warne Scope Mounts during product development. One of the tests we use is the Lead Sled test. Some shooters believe that lead sleds are not hard on their rifle and scope but this video proves otherwise. We have heard from several optics companies that using a lead sled can cause internal parts failure in a scope. You can damage the stock, as well as the mounting system. The worst scope damage I have personally seen was a customer shooting a Tikka in a lead sled. He broke 3 different brands of rings and scarred his Nightforce scope badly. We decided to run a pair of bases and Maxima rings on his rig, and everything held together fine; while one would think it was a hard recoiling cartridge like a 338wm, it was only a 308. We use a lead sled with a 338wm or a 375 Ruger with a heavy scope to try and simulate worst-case scenarios and torture testing. I would not personally use a lead sled if I cared about the rifle. 🤍

In this video we look at the two very popular mounting options Weaver and Picatinny. We show you different features and what to look out for with each system. A Picatinny Rail is a full length rail of slots, with a 5.23mm wide slot every 10mm. Whereas Weaver Bases have usually 4 (sometimes 3) slots of 4.57mm wide, and are fitted either side of the ejection port. Both have the same cross-section profile and is 21mm wide. But as the slots are different widths, picatinny being the wider of the two, you will find that Weaver Mounts will fit onto both Weaver and Picatinny Rails/Bases, but Picatinny Mounts will not fit onto Weaver Rails/Bases. We would always suggest a picatinny rail when mounting a One-Piece Mount or Night Vision Mount because these mounts can't fit over the ejection port gap and don't align with the weaver slots. - PRO's of Weaver Bases: - Neater Appearance - More space around the ejection port - Less Weight - CON's of Weaver Bases: - Less slots, so less options of mounting positions - Very unlikely to be able to switch scopes on different rifles - One-Piece Mounts will not fit across the bases and do not align with the slots. - PRO's of Picatinny Rail: - More slots, so more mounting positions - You can fit One-Piece Mounts and Night Vision Mounts to it - You can interchange scopes across from Picatinny to Picatinny - CON's of Picatinny Rail: - More Weight than Weaver Bases - Fitting Instruction Videos: - Picatinny Rail - 🤍 - Weaver bases - 🤍 Thanks for Watching and remember to Subscribe to our Channel

This video provides a basic introduction to the most popular styles of scope rings and bases. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains the design and function of Weaver, Redfield, and Leupold Quick Detachable style scope mounting systems. The introduction begins with the Weaver-style mounting system. This system, featuring both one and two-piece bases, uses a large dovetail with a slot machined across the base. The ring contains a crossbolt which rests inside this slot when the ring is clamped on, preventing any forward or backward movement. The second system discussed is the Redfield, or standard, type mounting system. This system features a dovetail on the front ring that seats in a corresponding recess in the front base. The rear base features windage screws which allow the user to make windage corrections by adjusting the mounting system, rather than using the adjustments on the scope. The Redfield, or standard, scope mounting system is produced by most ring and base manufacturers. These include Redfield, Burris, Leupold, Millett, and Weaver. The final system examined in this video is the Leupold Quick Detachable mounting system. This system, popular for dangerous game guns, allows the shooter to remove and reattach the scope to the rifle without a change in zero. The rings feature a post that nestles into the base and is locked in place using the attached lever. This video will give you the information you need to make an informed decision regarding your next scope ring and base system.
