One notable element is the wide C-pillar, which lacks windows. The car exhibits sporty characteristics, evident in details such as the wheels and the door stripes. Chery has chosen to label the design language of the Omoda 5 as "Art in motion," although this terminology has been frequently used in various art and design contexts. Under the hood, the Omoda 5 is equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, delivering an impressive output of 197 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque. This power is managed by a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Additionally, Chery is currently developing plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) versions of the Omoda 5. The side profile of the Omoda 5 is equally striking, featuring concealed B-pillars and C-pillars, as well as a floating roof. The waistline gradually ascends from the front to the rear, contributing to its sporty stance. Notable sporty accents include the wide wheel arches and the five-spoke black alloys adorned with orange detailing. Interestingly, despite being a new Chinese car in 2022, the Omoda 5 retains traditional door handles instead of the more contemporary pop-out door handles. But in the case of Chery, it's actually relaunching Down Under after an unsuccessful stint in certain states last decade. Needless to say, there's a lot riding on its first model, the Omoda 5. The 2023 Chery Omoda 5 is a small SUV, so it competes with the MG ZS and Haval Jolion at the more affordable end of the segment. Speaking of which, the Omoda 5 hangs its hat on value, offering competitive pricing alongside a long list of standard equipment. The steering wheel has a flat bottom. The infotainment system is equipped with voice interaction, Apple Carplay, Huawei Hicar, and Baidu CarLife. In terms of safety, the new Omoda 5 also comes with a driver attention detection system. Other features include a SONY audio system, 64-color atmosphere lights, an air purification system, and wireless charging of mobile phones. The Chery Omoda 5 comes in two powertrain options. 1.5T four-cylinder gasoline engine: maximum power of 115kW matched with a simulated 9-speed CVT. This is set to be one of many new models on the way, with the Omoda 5 jumping in first, straight into the competitive small SUV market segment. Just one variant is available – with or without a sunroof – powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine developing 108kW and 210Nm. It comes with a CVT auto and front-wheel drive. Prices start from $29,900 (excluding on-road costs). Although some of the concerns we have with this vehicle could be justified by a very low price, at $30k before on-roads, it’s actually $400 more than the most affordable Kia Seltos, and $3000 more expensive than the cheapest Hyundai Kona.
