Chandra Namaskāra Salutation of the Moon The Vedic scriptures speak of the spiritual and cosmic importance of the solar and lunar phases. The Sun controls our soul, while the Moon has command of our mind. The interaction of these two planets produces changing phases of the Moon. Changing from new to full moon and in reverse, these phases affect Earth, animal and plant life and human body, mind and emotions. Chandra Namaskāra is a practice of adoration of the Moon. In Sanskrit, Chandra means "the moon" and Namaskāra stands for "salutation, adoration". This practice linked with the lunar cycles consists of fourteen asanas performed with the left and right side. The sequence of the asanas matches the 14-day movement of the Moon to the full moon phase and the 14-day movement to the new moon phase. Chandra Namaskāra is performed 14 times, with 7 cycles for the left and right side, reciting the mantras of the Nityas. Regular practices of Chandra Namaskara purify vital energy that circulates in the body and allow to control varying moods, actions and other processes in human life influenced by the change of the Nityas. The best time for performing this practice is the evening or the night when the Moon is visible. Chandra Namaskar, the Moon Salutation, has a harmonising and balancing effect. It activates the cooling Lunar, Yin energy, that is responsible for regeneration and rejuvenation and also for turning the awareness inward. The best time to practice Chandra Namaskar is in the evening. This is the time where we need to calm down and turn away from our daily activities towards our calm inner world. This practice is also a good preparation for an evening meditation, to end your day and allow your your mind to clear and calm. A guided evening meditation is linked at the end of the video and in the description box below. I recommend to practice this meditation directly after this sequence. 🤍 In contrary to the Sun Salutation, we start the Moon saltuation with the left side of the body. The Yin side in which Ida Nadi flows, this is how this energy is called in Yoga. Practice with a meditative awareness, which means mindfully, not controling the breath. Moon Salutation: Chandra Namaskar Sequence Easy to Learn and Practice


The Moon Salutation or Chandra Namaskara is a series of poses performed in a particular sequence to create a cooling and flowing movement. Like the popular Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara), each pose in a Moon Salutation is also coordinated with your breathing. But unlike Sun Salutations, where we are encouraged to hold each pose for a longer time, in Moon Salutation, poses flow into each other without much hold in each position. This is one reason why Sun Salutations are heating and stimulating while Moon Salutations are cooling and quieting.
